Alfa Kamal

Alfa unveiled its new 4WD concept - the Kamal - at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this month. The model aims to be a fusion of different vehicle types - in Sanskrit the word 'Kamal' means 'red' - appropriately enough for Alfa - and in Arabic means 'perfection' or the 'synthesis of opposites'.

The Kamal is powered by the 3.2 V6 24V unit delivering 250 bhp. Power output is 250 bhp at 6200 rpm, with peak torque of 300 Nm (30.6kgm) at 4800 rpm - the torque curve reaches very high levels even at low speeds, allowing the vehicle to travel in 6th gear at less than 2000 rpm and to slip rapidly away without needing to change gear. Alfa have chosen the Selespeed F1-style gearbox unit for faster gear changes at low and high speeds. If rumours - unconfirmed by Alfa Romeo - are true the Kamal power unit will be designed and developed by Holden here in Australia - ranging from the 3.2 V6 mentioned here to a twin-turbo V6 for the top of the range model. The connection is via General Motors which has a stake in Alfa Romeo parent company Fiat which will see Holden engines in a variety of cars including Saab, also a GM owned company.

Alfa GTV

At every moment of Alfa Romeo history, one particular car has always been entrusted with the task of representing the very best of Alfa's technology. A pure, uncompromising car, the symbol of Alfa Romeo's philosophy as a manufacturer.
In this spirit, Alfa Romeo presents the Alfa GTV, its modern interpretation of the concept of the sports coupe. A car designed and built to give unique, inimitable driving pleasure.
At its heart lies the perfect synthesis of state-of-the-art technologies, each an integral part of a refined mechanical project. Different engines designed for different users, but all with the same extraordinary Alfa performance.

"Alfa Romeo sports cars are the very definition of Alfa Romeo," says Chris Burger, General Manager for Alfa Romeo in New Zealand. "They provide the character, spirit and passion that infuses all of the Alfa Romeo range and in the new Alfa Romeo sports cars all their abilities and skills have been revitalized, refreshed and empowered."

Alfa Competizione

Designed and developed at the Alfa Romeo Style Centre, this prototype will become a true brand icon, evoking a great sports car tradition of which the name is part. In the Thirties and Forties, the '8c' signature that returns here, identified the racing and road cars that were equipped with the new eight cylinder engine developed by the famous engineer Vittorio Jano. The term 'Competizione' on the other hand, is a tribute to the 6C 2500 Competizione, the sports coupe driven by Fangio and Zanardi in the famous Mille Miglia race in 1950. So '8c Competizione' is not an invented name, but a clear reference to Alfa's racing history. And of course the Alfa Romeo legend was created to a great extent by the victories its cars achieved on race courses all around the world. There were so many of them that alone they represent a long, fascinating chapter, made of men and competitive spirit, engines and cutting edge technical ideas. The protagonists of the inestimable human and technological heritage that is responsible for today's beautiful cars, full of character and, above all, capable of combining the beauty of the styling with the pleasure of driving them.

Alfa Brera

ItalDesign's Alfa Romeo Brera, the smash hit of the Geneva Auto Salon, is fully production ready according to Alfa Romeo. The all wheel drive, V8 powered prototype, penned by the legendary Giorgetto Giugiaro, is a traditional 2+2 GT coupe design with bodywork entirely in carbon fiber. The engine, a 90 degree V8 displacing 4.2 liters, produces 402 bhp. To aid in servicing, the entire front clip of the Brera can be removed to provide easy access. The engine is set rearward in the chassis to aid with weight distribution, and the car features a rear transaxle with the Selespeed sequential gearbox.

Alfa 147

Alfa Romeo has done the impossible: It has made the Alfa Romeo 147 look even better looking and it has made it even more financially attractive with the launch of the new Alfa Romeo 147.
The award winning Alfa Romeo 147, already acclaimed as one of the most beautiful cars in the world, has been given a sharp new look and its prices – already some of the sharpest in its market sector – and been dropped with the launch of the new car.

The award winning Alfa Romeo 147, already acclaimed as one of the most beautiful cars in the world, has been given a sharp new look and its prices – already some of the sharpest in its market sector – and been dropped with the launch of the new car.
Front and rear, the new Alfa Romeo 147 has a new, aggressive look, with a larger, repositioned Alfa Romeo shield and new headlights providing a new, more purposeful look, while at the rear, the Alfa Romeo 147 has revised lights, hatch trim and bumpers endowing the rear of the 147 with a new, purposeful stance. Inside, the Alfa Romeo 147 retains the interior against which all cars with sporting pretensions must be judged, from the hip-hugging, leather clad seats, to the triple-cowled instruments, the Alfa Romeo 147 interior screams unique.

The Alfa Romeo 147 is spectacularly well equipped, whether it's the technical specification, with ASR, EBD, VDC and MSR all included in the equipment roster, or safety features, with six air bags, ABS brakes, fire prevention system, all included. And as for luxury. Leather is standard, hand crafted Momo in the five door versions, soft and supple sports leather in the three door versions; power windows, mirrors and locks are included, as its cruise control, trip computer and dual zone climate control Air Conditioning. Both versions have 17 inch alloy wheels – Super Sport on the three door 147 and multi-spoke on the five door – fitted with low profile/high grip tyres.

Alfa 159

The Alfa Romeo 159 is a mid-size sedan produced by the Italian manufacturer Alfa Romeo since 2005.

The 159, the replacement for the hugely successful Alfa Romeo 156, was introduced in production form at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show. The Giugiaro-designed sedan uses the GM/Fiat Premium platform, shared with the Brera, Spyder, and Kamal. The 159 will be available with either front or all wheel drive. In 2006, Alfa Romeo will release a four wheel drive GTA variant with a 3.2 L V6 JTS engine.

Alfa 156

To take the very concept of sportiness back to the drawing board and then combine the classic Alfa Romeo form and performance with the driving ease, top-level comfort, style and quality of a great sedan.

This was the thinking behind the Alfa 156: an up-to-date interpretation of typical Alfa Romeo traits in the shape of an absolutely original sedan. The car's flair and personality are unparalleled for a four-door version due to the design of the side and passenger compartment surfaces: compact, low, and penetrating. Only the front door handles are apparent because the rear door handles have been successfully styled to make them unobtrusive.A combination of double wishbone front suspension and advanced MacPherson rear suspension makes for outstanding car performance.Driving precision and perfect control on wet, slippery surfaces, crisp immediate response, great ability to absorb and smooth out road surface stress. These are the sensations you will always feel at the wheel of an Alfa 156.All you have to do to convince yourselves that the Alfa 156 is the right car for you is to try it.

Alfa 146

The Alfa Romeo 145 and Alfa Romeo 146 were two compact cars produced by the Italian manufacturer Alfa Romeo between 1994 and 2001. The 145 and 146 both share common design plans and interior components from the B-pillar forwards; the 145 is a 3-door hatchback, whereas the 146 is a 5-door.

To replace its ageing 33 model, Alfa Romeo launched these two cars in 1994 (the 145) and 1995 (the 146) to compete in the extremely competitive mid-size hatchback market. A spacious and uniquely Italian interior was presented to the press at the launch, and by all accounts it was well received; its oddly shaped cut-away dashboard attracted much attention, but in fact the design was for safety rather than aesthetic purposes.

Based on the Fiat Tipo chassis, the cars were widely praised for their handling, particularly the sharp, responsive steering. The 1.8l and 2.0l engine cars were equipped with a 'quick-rack' which improved steering responsiveness, but as a result the turning circle was compromised. The sporty suspension set-up was harsher than most others in its category at the time, but this was likely an intentional decision in line with the Fiat Group's marketing of Alfa Romeo as a sporting brand.

In terms of styling, the styling cues introduced in the Alfa Romeo 164 were continued, and the lighting clusters of the 146 gave definite hints about the forthcoming Alfa Romeo 166.

While the volume of 145s and 146s sold was moderately low, parts availability is good in most respects. Owners clubs can often advise on multiple sources of parts or workarounds.

145s and 146s are particularly prized by owners of older Alfa Romeo Sprints, as their more advanced twin-spark engines can be freely transplanted into the older cars, by virtue of the earliest vehicles inheriting the older 1.7 L Boxer engines which are backwards compatible with the older 33s and Sprints. In consequence, mounting and transmission interfaces are retained, allowing a Sprint to receive a 1.8 litre Twin Spark into its engine bay with minimal modification of the engine or the Sprint itself.

Timeline
A 2000 Alfa Romeo 1461994 - 145 launched. Engines were 1.3 8v Boxer, 1.6 8v Boxer, 1.7 16v Boxer & 1.9 Turbo Diesel
1995 - 146 launched, using same engines as 145.
1996 - 145 Cloverleaf and 146 TI models introduced, using 2.0 16v Twin Spark engine.
1997 - All Boxer engines replaced by more powerful, more efficient Twin Spark engines.
1998 - New Twin Spark engines from the Alfa Romeo 156 were imported into the 145/146 to replace the existing designs, due to the requirement to meet stricter emissions and noise regulations and for minor cost savings. Engine power was slightly lowered as a result.
1999 - 1.9 JTD Turbo Diesel replaced existing diesel engine.
2000 - Various minor revisions, including color-coded bumpers, door handles and mirrors.

Alfa 155

The Alfa Romeo 155 was a mid-size sedan automobile produced by the Italian manufacturer Alfa Romeo between 1992 and 1998.

1.7 Twin Spark, 1.8 Twin Spark and 2.0 Twin Spark engines were available, the latter two with variable valve timing. Two four-cylinder turbo diesel engines, a 1.9 (92bhp) and a 2.5 (125bhp) were available in some markets. At the top of the 155 range were the 2.5 V6, using an engine derived from the 3.0 V6 used in the 164, and the Q4, which used drivetrain derived from the Lancia Delta Integrale, including a 190bhp 2.0 16V turbocharged engine and permanent four wheel drive. The Q4 also incorporated three differential gears (normal at the front, epicyclic at the centre (including a Ferguson viscous coupling) and torsen self-locking at the rear). Both the 2.5 V6 and Q4 models were also available with electronically adjustable suspension with two damper settings (automatic and sport).

In 1995 the 155 was given an extensive revamp giving the car wider front and rear wheel bases. Other changes included a multi-valve cylinder head incorporated into the Twin Spark engine and revised steering rack and suspension. Series 2 155s can be distinguished from their earlier counterparts by their flared front wheel arches. The engine range was also altered, with the 1.8 and 2.0 being upgraded to 16 valves, and the 1.7 replaced by an all-new 1.6 16v.

The 155 was phenonemonally successful in touring car racing, using the sporting variants GTA (for "super touring" specification championships) and V6 TI (for the DTM). Between 1992 and 1994, the 155 managed to take the Italian Superturismo championship, the German DTM championship (both with Nicola Larini at the wheel), the Spanish Touring Car Championship (with Adrian Campos), and the British Touring Car Championship (with Gabriele Tarquini). The 155 remained competitive until it was replaced with the 156, finishing third in the DTM (then known as the International Touring Car Championship, or ITC) in 1996 with Alessandro Nannini and winning the Spanish championship again in 1997 with Fabrizio Giovanardi. The 156 was to continue the high standard set by the 155, winning the European Touring Car Championship multiple times.
